USISPF Hosted a Congressional Briefing on Pharmaceutical Supply Chains

The briefing was led by Mark Linscott, Senior Advisor for Trade Policy at USISPF and Former Assistant USTR, Philip Chen, Deputy VP for International at PhRMA, and Robert Tota, Manager, Global Policy and Public Affairs at Pfizer. The conversation was moderated by USISPF’s Anushka Shah. The panel highlighted the strategic significance of increased bilateral collaboration to unlock greater innovation, supply chain diversification, and enhanced global health outcomes.

USISPF, with the support of KPMG, has put together a report titled “Forging a Resilient Future: India’s Opportunities to Expand Pharma Investments, Trade and Global Collaborations”. India remains a key player in the pharma industry that has witnessed exponential growth with an expected market size of $$1.8 trillion by 2027. The Indian ecosystem dominates the manufacturing with over 60% of the total vaccine supply and 20% volume of global pharmaceutical production, and is now the largest supplier of generics and vaccines globally. Through this report, the question we try to ask, and answer is ‘why is India not better integrated in the global value chain despite its manufacturing capability of generics?’ To give a nuanced understanding of the key bottlenecks, the team interviewed over 20 supply chain industry leaders who provided valuable feedback on policy and regulatory improvements to unlock India’s potential.
